Their homes, their savings, their livestock, even basic documents. Now, none of this should surprise us because experts have been saying for years that Assam has a flood management problem. To understand why, you have to first understand Assam itself. Imagine the Brahmaputra as a giant river racing down from the Himalayas. Up in the mountains, the river is steep and fast, carrying enormous amounts of rocks, sand and silt, in fact, one of the highest sediment loads of any river in the world. But the moment it enters the flat plains of Assam, the river suddenly slows down. It's like a truck speeding downhill and then slamming the brakes. All that sand and silt that it's carrying has to go somewhere. So it settles on the riverbed, making the river shallower over time. At the same time, hundreds of tributaries carrying rainwater from Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan, Nagaland, pour into the Brahmaputra. Now during the monsoon, obviously heavy rain isn't falling only in Assam. It falling across the entire basin at once sending massive volumes of water downstream together This means flooding to some extent is natural The problem is when a natural flood becomes a human disaster And that's where the flood policy comes in. Since India's natural flood policy of 1954, the dominant strategy in Assam has been to build more embankments. Today the state has nearly 5,000 km of embankments. But many are decades old, poorly maintained and built for a river that has changed its course again and again. Every year, many of these embankments breach. And because embankments often prevent rivers from spreading naturally, they can trap water inside, worsen drainage and make flooding even more destructive when they fail. That's why many river scientists now argue the answer isn't just more embankments. It's restoring wetlands that act like giant natural sponges, protecting floodplains instead of building over them, better forecasting, better drainage, basin-wide planning that recognizes that the Brahmaputra isn't a river you can simply force into submission. Every monsoon, Assam reminds us that floods are one of its biggest challenges. But if the political conversation remains flood jihad instead of flood management, then the real crisis risks being drowned out.
