This is what happens with a country that leaves its biggest environmentalists to die. India has been ranked the second worst performer in the world environmental performance index. In this list of 177 countries, India has ranked 176th and also the lowest among eight South Asian countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Now these rankings are given based on 47 indicators across three policy categories. Environmental health, ecosystem vitality and climate change. The indicators include air quality, drinking water, sanitation, tree cover loss, marine habitat protection and how successful a country has been in reducing emissions. This list is compiled by scientists from Yale and Cambridge who rely on data from research institutes and international organizations like the WHO, World Bank and UNEP. This report comes out every two years. Last time, India ranked 176 out of the 180 countries and before that, we were the lowest ranked nation. Scientists say that India's very weak performance reflects continued reliance on coal-fired power, which has come down but still remains as high as over 70% of India's total electricity generation. Our 10-year performance score, though, shows that we are improving. So even though we're at the bottom, when the indicators for change are assessed over a 10-year period, India performance is better than even some of the countries that are …
