Kangpokpi IDPs protest delayed DBT, say thousands of families are struggling to survive

Hundreds of internally displaced persons or IDPs from Manipur's Kangpokpi district staged a protest on July 31, demanding the immediate release of the pending Direct Benefit Transfer or DBT. The protesters said that the financial assistance has become their only means of survival after losing their homes and livelihoods in the ethnic conflict. The protest, organized by the Kangpokpi District Internally Displaced Welfare Committee or KDIDWC, saw participation from displaced families, students, women, elderly persons and social workers. Several Kukizu leaders including Dr. Lamping Thang Haukip also joined the demonstration. carrying placards reading no home no job no dbt how do you survive my child is hungry where is dbt and dbt is our right not a favor the protesters urged the state government to immediately release the pending july 2026 dbt they also demanded equal treatment for all displaced persons saying assistance should not differentiate between those staying in relief camps and those living in rented accommodation. According to the KDI DWC families displaced by the conflict remain dependent on the monthly DBT after being forced to leave behind their homes farmland and livelihoods The assistance it said is used to buy essential food items medicines, hygiene products and to meet educational expenses. The committee said that although July is ending, no registered IDP in Kangpokpi district has received the month's DBT. It claimed that food stocks in several relief camps are running low, patients are unable to purchase medicines and many parents have been unable to pay school fees. The KDI DWC later submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through Deputy Chief Minister named Chakib Khan seeking immediate restoration of the DBT and continuation of the monthly assistance until displaced families are safely rehabilitated. The committee also served a five-day ultimatum warning that if the pending assistance is not released within the stipulated period, it will intensify its agitation through democratic means.
